What does the program involve?

The Schroth Best Practice® is an intensive program entails curve specific exercises that require concentration, dedication and practice. You will be required to have an x-ray done in order to start.

How long is the program?

For children the program typically is 12 to 16 hours long, with 1.5- 2 hour sessions each visit.

What kind of results should I expect from the program?

The main goals of the program are to eliminate pain, halt curve progression and improve posture.  Though some have reversal or improvement of their curves, we make no guarantees.

How long do I have to receive treatment?

Scoliosis has no cure and requires life-long management.  When children complete the immersion program, they continue the exercises until growth is complete. This can be done at home and we monitor each child every 6-8 weeks.  We also continue ongoing coaching for those who need the motivation to keep on track, to adjust your personal exercise program and to evaluate your curves. Upon completing growth the exercises taught are often helpful in preventing pain and curve progression.

How many hours do I need to exercise?

The daily exercise program at home is typically 30 minutes, 5 days a week minimum.

Can I use the Schroth method having undergone surgery?

Absolutely! The program is modified for surgical patients to improve their lung function, assist in derotation and stabilization of the spine.

Will I need to be braced as part of this program?

In growing children bracing is often necessary as their risks for progression is often high.

Why the Cheneau Gensingen brace?

This innovative brace offers significant advantages over other braces.  It has over 90% success rate at avoiding surgery, it offers 3D correction, it is compatible with the breathing done in th eschroth method, it is light weight with less material and works for small, medium and large curves.  Adults can also be braced for postural support and pain relief.

What should I expect with brace wear?

There is no pain involved.  The brace is light weight made with the least possible material and easily concealed.  Your child will need to wear the brace for 21-23 hours a day.

What age do I have to be for this program to be successful?

The earlier your child is in growth, the better the outcomes.  So we do not advise “watch and wait”.  The program is particularly successful with adults who are experiencing pain

Does this program work for all curvatures of the spine, like Kyphosis?

Yes.  There is a Schroth Best Practice® program specially designed for persons with kyphosis.

When do I take the xrays?

X-rays are required before the start of the program.  The request is often written up on examination or can be written before so that the x-ray is available at the time of evaluation.

In brace x-rays are also required after brace fitting so that we can make sure the correction is good and are able to measure the in-brace correction.  Once a year (for most) we also do an out of brace x-ray, where you are required to be out of the brace for 24 hours before the x-ray is done.  This is how we measure actual correction.
